Hard Chrome Plated Rod Buying Guide for Hydraulic OEMs
The piston rod is the most exposed part of a hydraulic cylinder. It runs through the seal package thousands of times and lives in dust, water and impact. Hard chrome plating over a precision ground base is what keeps it serviceable.
Choosing the base steel
- EN-8 — general purpose medium carbon steel for standard industrial duty.
- EN-8D — tighter chemistry control, better consistency for volume OEM supply.
- EN-9 — higher carbon content, higher strength for heavier loads and larger diameters.
- Induction hardened variants where surface impact resistance is critical.
Plating thickness and adhesion
A 20–25 micron hard chrome layer is the accepted standard for hydraulic piston rods. Thinner plating wears through early; excessively thick plating is prone to micro-cracking. Adhesion matters as much as thickness — always ask for adhesion test results.
Straightness and surface finish
Straightness deviation causes side loading, which destroys rod seals. Specify straightness tolerance per metre and verify it on receipt. Surface roughness should be measured with a profilometer; a smooth, uniform finish is what allows the seal to form its oil film.

- Visual check for pitting, burn marks and handling damage.

What chrome thickness should I specify for piston rods?
20–25 microns is standard for hydraulic service. Heavier or more corrosive duty can justify more, but adhesion and base preparation matter more than raw thickness.
