Hydraulic Cylinder Maintenance Guide: Extend Service Life
Hydraulic cylinders rarely fail because the steel gives up. They fail because contaminated oil scores the bore, a damaged chrome layer destroys the rod seal, or a misaligned mount side-loads the rod. Disciplined maintenance addresses all three.
Contamination control comes first
Particles in the fluid act like a lapping compound between the piston seal and the honed bore. Keep the reservoir sealed, replace filters on schedule, and take an oil sample at every major service. Cylinders on machines with clean oil routinely last several times longer than identical units on neglected systems.
Protect the piston rod
- Inspect the hard chrome plated rod for pitting, scoring and impact dents at every shift change on heavy equipment.
- Replace worn wiper seals promptly — a failed wiper drags abrasive dust straight into the cylinder.
- Never park equipment with rods fully extended in corrosive or coastal environments.
- Touch up or re-plate damaged chrome early; corrosion under the chrome layer spreads quickly.
Diagnosing cylinder drift
Drift under load usually means internal leakage past the piston seal, though it can also be a leaking control valve. Isolate the cylinder from the valve and observe whether drift continues. If it does, the piston seal, the piston-to-bore clearance or the bore finish is the problem.
Excessive bore wear cannot be fixed by reseal alone. In that case the barrel should be re-honed or replaced with a new honed tube.
Reseal, regrind or replace
- Reseal when the bore and rod are within tolerance and only sealing performance has degraded.
- Regrind and re-plate the rod when chrome is worn or damaged but the base steel is straight.
- Replace the barrel when bore diameter or roundness is out of tolerance after honing.
- Replace the cylinder when mounting eyes are elongated or the tube wall is deformed.
Frequently asked questions
How often should hydraulic cylinders be inspected?
Visually inspect rods and seals at every shift on mobile equipment, and carry out a full inspection with oil sampling at each scheduled plant maintenance interval.
Can a scored hydraulic cylinder bore be repaired?
Light scoring can often be corrected by re-honing the barrel. If the bore falls outside tolerance after honing, the barrel should be replaced with a new seamless honed tube.
